Artist Statement
I am interested in the questions "what if?", "what's next?" and "where is the fun part?" Innovation, ingenuity and originality are key to the work that I am interested in making now. I work in many different materials because the challenges of each media allow different explorations into what is possible. Craftmanship and artistic principals are paramount to the execution of each project.

I went with LEC to Moe's paper clay class and I was so impressed with Moe's teaching that I never missed a clay class after that day. She is a NATURAL teacher and and wonderful facilitator. I stopped going to the LEC after she left. I WISH that she would return! If she does, I'll go back. Moe is an AMAZING woman!! Dr. Chris R.
I always enjoyed your painting classes and your advice on how to proceed to finish my pictures. With your help and guidance I was able to create unbelievable portraits of my close friends and family. I miss you, no doubt. Marilyn S.
There is no doubt that you are a consummate artist. I still have the material you provided for your class on creativity. You are a gifted teacher, and many artists cannot both teach and create, but you can. It was gifts given to us by you, and we all grew from you to be better artists and better people. ... Moe has been a great inspiration to me as an artist, and she bent over backwards to ensure that I and the other artists have been encouraged, informed, and supported. Margaret Z.
I interacted with you Pre-Covid at Wednesday open studio and sometimes critiques and portraits. When Covid hit, you organized zoom classes. I enjoyed them all, and the zoom art classes contributed to my mental health during that period. I am a teacher myself, so I feel I know how much effort good teaching takes. Mish M.
After being shut in for almost two years I am grateful for the sacrifice you made during Covid. My painting are coming to life because of your talent and experience in the art world that you have shared with me. You have the ability to make everyone feel like they belong, thank you. Virginia F.
I learned about Portrait Painting with you, but need to learn more. If you decide to teach it again, let me know. Joyce S.
Hi Moe just wanted to let you know that you were a great inspiration to me. I learned a lot from you in our Art class. Your words of encouragement and your knowledge of Art techniques were always spot on. I just loved how you always kept us all engaged with shows and with movies of great artists. Margarita T.

Maureen Murphy! You are a multi talented person who is like the person who spins a disc on top of a stick, adds another disc onto another stick until there are multiple discs spinning and you managed to keep them all spinning so they didn't fall to the ground. While other people were binging on TV series and movies during COVID shutdown, I was enjoying zoom classes with Lionel, Sarah, Rick and Kathy and it made a terrible time in our lives enjoyable. You did that! Thank you for you! I love the way God places people in our paths and makes it all good and I was so fortunate that our paths crossed. I miss you and the LEC. Its not the same with you not there. Lee R. 2022
I have seen your art (stunning, created with a trained and deft eye), and have heard you present on Zoom to about 20 people a few yrs ago. Well thought out, timely, and wise presentation for our Group. All these qualities are also good teacher qualities, so am sure your guidance is helpful and well received. Christina B. 2022
My Mom attended the oil painting classes... She loved the class, the fellow artists and the LEC became second family. My mom was up in her 80s and was getting dementia. Moe came along and adopted my Mom. I lived 50 miles away so I was ever grateful for Moe and all she did for Mom. Forever grateful. Becky H. 2022
We all did the best we could to navigate through COVID. Your leadership created a lot of opportunities for many. One of my favorite times was when you brought the young and the old together and uplifted a local charter school .…we know you made it look easy , but always so much behind the scenes that goes unnoticed to make everything come together. Gail K. 2022
Mo, you have done a outstanding job always helping me, and encouraging me. You are top notch. You are missed, the Life Enrichment can't replace you. Allan K. 2022
Moe gave her heart and soul to the Life Enrichment Center for so many years. I was especially impressed by her hard work during the pandemic. Because of her, the LEC has been able to offer Zoom classes for over two years. She worked many, many nights and weekends to make that happen, and at times she was the only employee. She kept the calendar full of offerings when other senior centers closed. She has no equal as a grant writer. She is integral to the Tampa arts community. Under her guidance, the LEC did amazing community outreach programs. She was never one to brag, and I probably know about half of what she did for the LEC.... I'll never forget the series she did for the school. She reached out to the community in countless ways. Somehow she managed to write grant applications, keep the Zoom classes going, and do all her administrative duties as well. I know it meant giving up many nights and weekends; she did so much for the LEC community and the larger community. It was gifts given to us by her, and we all grew from her to be better artists and better people. Margaret Z. 2022
Moe, your gifts are many. Your commitment to sharing your unusual and imaginative talents in so many fields of art, generously and freely, your intuitive talent for bringing out the best in everyone you interact with, your undeniable skill in managing dozens of people with various degrees of artistic ability, the determination you are gifted with — these are the attributes that I think of when I think of Moe Murphy. You will always be an interesting woman. Your joy comes from connecting. Noni B. 2022
I have known Ms. Murphy for three years in her position as Executive Director of the Life Enrichment Center in Tampa, FL. During this time, I have been a student, instructor and volunteer at the LEC. I spend about six hours per week interacting with and observing Ms. Murphy in her various capacities as educator, artist, grant-writer, and course facilitator. She is extremely knowledgeable about a wide range of artistic fields and shares that knowledge freely and competently. If there is something that she doesn't know, she promptly finds and shares the answer. Ms. Murphy radiates enthusiasm, creativity and practicality in all she does. She seems to love learning herself and watching others learn and grow. She has taught me a great deal about art, teaching methods, and how to manage student learning styles and expectations. In particular, Ms. Murphy has an ability to recognize the technical, educational and personal goals of students and provide the resources to help them achieve those goals. I find the LEC environment to be open, accepting, supportive, and creative. Learning from and sharing with others is actively encouraged, as is experimentation and exploration. I believe this is due in large part to Ms. Murphy's vision, wide experience, and determination. Kathleen F. 2019
I have known Maureen Murphy for the past two years in my present capacity as the arts educational specialist for the Florida Department of Education. She is passionate about providing equity and accessibility for our exceptional needs students as well as the arts in general. I have had the chance to work with Maureen on more than one occasion. Each time she has proven herself to be professional, thoughtful and through. On a proposed collaborative project, Maureen spent hours collecting articles and research pertaining to students with disabilities to provide useful data and research on the subject. Most recently, I invited Maureen to be a part of the Florida Lead Team, a 13 member panel whose purpose it was to provide the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) with a collective perspective from Florida experts in the field regarding the new National Arts Standards. Her participation was invaluable in helping to outline the comments that we sent to both NCCAS and the State Agency Educators Directors for Arts Education (SEADAE). This in turn helped to shape the standards that will be used by various states across the nation. In our interactions Maureen has always shown herself to be motivated, enthusiastic and well-prepared. I believe that she would be a valuable asset for any team. Sincerely, John J. LeTellier, Jr. Arts Education Specialist, Florida Department of Education, 2014
Providing this Letter of Recommendation for Maureen Murphy is a welcome opportunity to boast about someone who is an excellent asset for the advancement of the arts and cultural sector as a whole, particularly as it relates to issues of equity in our sector. I have had the pleasure of a wonderfully collaborative relationship with Ms. Murphy over the past two years in her multi-faceted role with the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs. From inclusion, to advocacy and grants, Ms. Murphy has been an invaluable resource for my work as an administrator with Broward Cultural Division in arts education services and advocacy. She deeply understands the interconnectivity of the arts and operates from a holistic perspective that is refreshing given that one of the greatest obstacles faced by our sector is the tendency of its parts to function within silos. Today, working through collaborations and partnerships to synergistically integrate and leverage resources is more than critical. Organizations with leaders who are able to do this have been proven to be the most successful. Maureen has an extensive network of supporters from both the public and private sector; she connects the dots and brings together the right kinds of people. Currently, we are working together to convene a Stat Roundtable on Arts Advocacy, Equity and Leadership; she brought the people to the table. Her leadership stems not from position, but from character, mission, purpose and commitment to the arts and cultural access for all. . . Grace Kewl-Durfey, Arts Administrator, Broward Cultural Division, 2014
It is an honor for me to write this letter of support for one of the most dedicated arts administrators that I have had the privilege to work with- Maureen Murphy. Ms. Murphy and I have worked together for the past year in several capacities, giving me the opportunity to recognize her strengths as both a creative individual and non-profit administrator. While working with Ms. Murphy on a grant that provides professional development opportunities for teaching artists. I experienced her willingness to provide support, direction, guidance and assistance. Her knowledge of the reporting requirements for DFS is extensive - and a crucial asset to any organization that receives state and/or Federal funding. Ms. Murphy has also demonstrated expertise in regards to issues of accessibility and inclusion. She has provided clear direction and guidance for organizations, helping us to succeed in making our programs and products accessible for all. Her extreme dedication to this comes from a professional belief of the importance as well as personal experience. FAAE produces four days of professional development for teachers and teaching artists every year- in addition to our annual conference. These symposiums occur on Saturdays. Ms. Murphy has enthusiastically presented workshops on various topics at these events. She is not compensated for this and has also covered her own travel to be able to provide this support. Her sessions are always very informative and well received. I have also had the privilege of viewing Ms. Murphy's art work. To simply refer to her as creative is a gross understatement. Her talent is immense. Her work is evocative and exquisitely executed. Words cannot describe her talent. Maureen Murphy's contributions to the arts in Florida and the non-profit community have been intensive and heartfelt. She is creative, highly organized, and has a highly informed knowledge of the arts as well as accessibility. She is a leader and an innovator. .. Caroll Vick, Executive Director, Florida Alliance for Arts Education, 2014
It is with pleasure that I write this letter of support for Maureen Murphy. I am so pleased that Maureen Murphy is the Stat of Florida's ADA coordinator. As executive director of VSA Florida I work alongside Maureen on cultural access in the arts. With Maureen's leadership the opportunities to bring cultural access to the attention of the state's cultural organizations has reached new levels. Maureen has: - Implemented a series of webinars that addressed best practices for cultural organizations to be disability friendly. -Increased the awareness of the state's cultural organization on the resources available to increase access for cultural organizations through website listing specific resource lists and emails sent directly to cultural organizations. - Encouraged cultural organizations to develop their policies and procedures to accommodate people with disabilities, including the listing of the ADA coordinator and describe the access work as part of the state's grant program requirements. -Worked on codifying the requirements to be a quality teaching artist. -Connected with many organizations that provide services for people with disabilities to introduce them to the opportunities of the cultural organization in the sate and the accommodations that are available for access. Maureen definitely sees the big picture in her work but also focuses on the details to make sure things get done accurately and in a timely manner. She is dedicated to increasing the opportunities for individuals with disabilities and their families and friends to enjoy the state's wonderful cultural offerings. Marian Winters, Executive Director, VSA, 2013
